Nursing education crisis: ‘We need action now’
Nursing education staff have raised the alarm over university course closures, sharing fears about how such closures could impact nurse recruitment. There are currently 41,000 vacant registered nurse posts in the UK.
In a survey of more than 600 nurse lecturers and other higher education nursing staff, more than 6 in 10 reported redundancies, restructurings, and recruitment freezes. The situation has become so bad that 1 in 4 nursing educators are considering leaving the profession altogether.
Universities across the UK are facing severe financial difficulties due to a significant fall in the number of international students, along with rising costs and overheads.
It’s also reported that when students finish their courses, they’ve been told there are no graduate-entry nursing roles available. Education standards are also under threat, with 3 in 4 saying cuts would impact the outcomes of nursing students.
To address the crisis, the RCN calls for the next UK government to deliver an emergency financial intervention to stabilize higher education institutions within 100 days of taking office.

Ontario will need tens of thousands of new nurses, PSWs by 2032
Ontario will need 33,200 more nurses and 50,853 more personal support workers by 2032. The projections of nurses and PSWs the province will need — above and beyond those currently being educated through the system — are not surprising to the unions representing workers in the healthcare system, who have been sounding the alarm for years about shortages.
But it is telling that the government tried to keep the public from seeing those numbers, said Sharleen Stewart, the president of SEIU Healthcare, the largest union representing long-term care workers. "It's the government that has to have the will to address it," she said.
In 2022, the province needed 6,000 more nurses across all healthcare sectors. In 2023, the need rose to 10,110 and this year it was expected to be 13,200. By 2027 the province is expected to need 20,700 additional nurses, growing to 33,200 by 2032.

27 Meghalaya nurses get offers from hospitals in Japan under state scheme
Twenty-seven nurses attended Meghalaya’s Overseas Nursing Job Fair last year and have been offered opportunities to work in various hospitals and care homes in Japan after receiving language training under the state government’s Skill Meghalaya initiative.
“It is great to see nurses from the state move out and serve people overseas. We send them blessings and hope to hear positive stories about them. I also urge others to come forward and take the opportunity not only to earn a livelihood overseas but also, to enhance their knowledge and career,” chief minister Conrad K Sangma said, according to a state government statement. He was speaking at an event where he met with the teachers and students involved with the initiative.
Over a thousand nurses had registered for the nursing job fair held in August 2023. Four firms, including NAVIS, were identified and MoUs signed in December 2023 to facilitate language training and job placements in countries such as Japan, the UK, Singapore, and the UAE. The “Skills Meghalaya” initiative, where the nurses receive language training, aims to equip the youth with additional skills. The program, organized by MSSDS and the Department of Health & Family Welfare, collaborates with potential firms to provide language training and job placement opportunities.

DMW pushes for scholarships and training programs for overseas Filipino nurses
The overseas deployment of Filipino nurses continues to go on an upward trend as the recent number of rehires and new hires increased by over 100 percent.
According to figures from the Department of Migrant Workers (DMW), overseas deployment of land-based nursing professionals reached 81,213 in 2023 - more than double the 38,457 tallied in 2022. The trend is expected to continue as 15,328 Filipino nursing professionals have been deployed in the first two months of 2024.

With the demand for healthcare professionals rising globally, the DMW said it is more important than ever to produce bilateral labor agreements that work for the interest of the Philippines, by making sure that its healthcare staffing is not affected. So far, the DMW has signed bilateral labor agreements with Vienna, Austria, and Alberta, Canada.
Talks have also started with Germany, the United Arab Emirates, the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia, Singapore and Qatar.
