Graduate guarantee for newly qualified nurses and midwives

Across the country, newly qualified nurses and midwives are about to graduate, ready to join the health and care system. For some, this period brings uncertainty, limited roles in preferred specialties or gaps between qualifying and starting work.

The Secretary of State confirmed the Government's Graduate Guarantee that this year every newly qualified nurse and midwife in England will have the opportunity to apply to join the health and social care workforce.

Recognizing the level of vacancies that currently exist across all bands, NHS providers are encouraged to recruit newly qualified nurses before vacancies formally arise. This forward-thinking approach means graduates can transition seamlessly from training into employment, reducing uncertainty and ensuring continuous patient care capacity.

National workshop by the WHO for strengthening nursing policy and practice in India

The Union Ministry of Health and Family Welfare (MoHFW), in collaboration with World Health Organization (WHO) and Jhpiego, hosted a three-day National Consultation and Experience Sharing Workshop in November 2025 to advance reforms in India's nursing and midwifery sector. The event aimed to strengthen governance, education, leadership, and workforce management in alignment with national health priorities and the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs).

The workshop brought together policymakers, senior officials, regulators, nursing educators, professional associations, and development partners to review ongoing initiatives, address emerging challenges, and exchange state-level innovations shaping the nursing ecosystem. Participants deliberated on equitable workforce distribution, quality assurance in education and training institutions, leadership development, and enhanced career progression pathways.

The workshop showcased innovations in digital learning, workforce planning, and nursing education, and promoted evidence-based policymaking and cross-state learning to build a resilient and empowered nursing workforce.

Ontario: 38 nurses below the age of 35 left the workforce for every 100 new nurses that started in 2023

Canada is burning through its young nurses at an alarming rate as healthcare systems across the country struggle to retain them, according to a new publication released by the Montreal Economic Institute (MEI).

Nursing job vacancies have tripled in just five years across Canada, jumping from 13,178 in 2018 to 41,716 in 2023. Ontario's situation has worsened by 68 per cent since 2014, with 38 nurses under 35 leaving for every 100 that entered in 2023.

British Columbia stands out as a beacon of improvement, having cut the turnover of young nurses by 50 per cent since 2014. Nearly 93 per cent of nurses trained in the province are now registered to practice there. Since 2022, the BC College of Nurses and Midwives has streamlined the accreditation process for internationally educated nurses by introducing a "triple-track" application that covers registered nurse, licensed practical nurse, and healthcare assistant designations.
